MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – October 6, 2003 – GE Medical Systems today unveiled VoiceScan on its LOGIQ 9 ultrasound scanner, which is a voice activated control feature that allows physicians and sonographers to control system functions by voice command alone.

By talking into a wireless headset, physicians and sonographers can interact with the LOGIQ 9 scanner and have it perform more than 150 actions.

Cindy Owen, RDMS, RVT at Baptist Memorial Hospital Desoto, TN has found Voice Scan to be a valuable addition to ultrasound scanning. “It allows me to use both hands for scanning since I can operate the system by voice. This is a great benefit when performing venous augmentation, when scanning large or difficult patients, and for portable exams in CCU or the neonatal nursery.”

A physician or sonographer activates the voice recognition component of VoiceScan on the LOGIQ 9 by talking into the headset. After a few simple commands, the LOGIQ 9 is ready to perform based on commands given by the sonographer.

“VoiceScan on the LOGIQ 9 will be great for exams that typically require three hands, such as a venous study in the lower extremities,” said Omar Ishrak, President and CEO of GE Medical Systems Global Ultrasound business. “Now, a physician or sonographer can conduct the exam alone, without the need for additional help because both hands are free to work on the patient. VoiceScan is like having a third hand.”

VoiceScan is the latest development in ultrasound user comfort and operator ergonomics. In 2001, GE introduced a floating keyboard on the LOGIQ 9 that moves up and down and left and right to allow a sonographer the ability to personalize a workspace to maximize comfort during an exam.

“Even on routine studies in the department I find that voice scan allows me to just relax my left arm in my lap. Since I am operating the system with voice, I don't have to reach across the system to adjust various controls. This reduces wear and tear on my body and also reduces overall fatigue during a scan day. I love using it,” added Owen.

The LOGIQ 9 and GE’s entire family of ultrasound products were designed by ultrasound users for ultrasound users. Each system offers improvements in image quality, ergonomics, workflow and advanced applications.

Voice activated control for hands-free operation is the newest feature designed to improve physician and sonographer comfort.

VoiceScan on the LOGIQ 9 represent the latest example of GE's commitment to developing and introducing cutting edge applications annually.
